Ester's ability to spontaneously cause stress fractures in structures| bodies and psyches turned him into a defeatist at an early age. He had few friends once they found out about his power. While they were entertained during sleep-learning classes by the number of new ways Ester could destroy the teaching machinery, they also got tired of waiting for broken playground auto-equipment to be fixed. Turning his pessimism to humor| Ester, calling himself "Calamity King," tried to join the Legion but was rejected on the grounds of being too dangerous to the other Legionnaires.
