From Who's Who in the Legion of Super-Heores 1:

When Vril DoxII defeated the computer tyrants who ruled Colu in the late 20th century, he did so by inventing a mutagenic stimulator which raised his intelligence to a unique level, a mutation that was passed down to Brainiac 5. Querl became famous for his scientific discoveries at an eraly age. After designing an idiomatic translator, an interstellar business networking system and a personal force-shield belt, he spent mroe and more of his time researching the one enigma he couldn't crack: time travel.

This interest led him to the Time Institute, where he began his studies under Circadia Senius, eventually helping on the final design of the Time Bubble. This invention brought him into contact with the Legion of Super-Heroes, a group that much intrigued him. He joined the Legion| using the name Brainiac 5, an honorific on his own world.

Since Coluans are so long-lived, he figured the time spent away from his research could be made up later, but the opportunity for this unique experience shouldn't be missed.

Brainiac 5 can usually bne found in or near his multi-lab, unless interrupted for a mission. Among his contributions to the Legion are the Legion flight ring, Mon-El's anti-lead serum, and the design and execution of the present Legion Headquarters.

Because his intelligence comes from a forced mutation, Brainiac 5 does suffer periods of mental instability. During these periods, he created Computo, the deadly computer intelligence now tamed and part of the Legion HQ, and Omega, the embodiment of his twisted hatred, now destroyed. He has also been mentally preyed upon, as when Pulsar Stargravetried to force his allegiance by posing as Brainiac's father, but has always found ways to defeat his weaknesses.

Brainiac 5 depends mostly on brainpower for his Legion accomplishments| using his skills of observation and analysis to determine the weaknesses of any foe. He wears a force shield belt capable of creating a field large enough to hold others or projecting force shields short distances away. He wears a Legion flight ring and has some knowledge of personal combat| gleaned more from his observations of the late Karate Kid than from personal training. Brainiac's other fields of study include an interest in the 20th century detective Batman.
