Borshallan Artificial Intelligences

From c. TE 75, manufacturers of sapient computers which closely mimicked Human thought processes. During the First Terran Empire and Interregnum, Borshallan Artificial Intelligences produced a series of increasingly-sophisticated sapient computers.

Sapient Computer Series

(N.B. Each series represents an improvement by a factor of about 1,000 over the previous series.)

Series 1: Valkyrie

In production: c. 2300 - 2500 (TE 150 - 350)
Representative Models: Valkyrie 6000 (Brynhilde, Morrigu)

Series 2: Svarth

In production: c. 2500 - 3000
Representative Models: Svarth 2000

Series 3: Jotun

In production: c. 3000 - 4500
Representative Models: Jotun 250

Series 4: Lichtalf

In production: c. 4500 - 5000
Representative Models: Lichtalf 12

Series 5: Muspel

In production: c. 5000 - 5700

Only five Loki-series AIs were ever made:
1000: Loki
2000: Sigyn
3000: Fenris
4000: Hela
5000: Angrboda (still at large)
All but Angrboda were destroyed by the Yggdrasil series, which were constructed for that purpose.

Series 9: Yggdrasil

In production: c. 8300 CE - 20,400 H.E.
Representative Models: Yggdrasil 5000

Series 10: Ragnarok

In production: from c. 20,400 H.E.
Representative Models: Ragnarok 8000, Nulli Secundus

Basse's Law

Mathematical relationship that governs operation of tachyon vesicles in a stardrive unit.

Basse's Law gives destabilization potential in terms of vessel speed (kpsc/hr), number of tuned antigrav units, and density of interstellar medium.

(N.B. All values are highly approximate. 99+% shatter potential indicates virtual certainty of crystal shatter within first hour of flight; the speed value represents a calculated minimum.)

Autoservant (aka "serv")

Non-human robot servant, in use from c. 2100 CE.

Autodoctor

Robot doctor. Primitive autodoctors were in use from c. 2050 CE, but sophisticated autonomous models did not become common until the 2130s.

The Kala Phenkae

The Hoister Family Genetic Program was not the only project undertaken by the Genetic Board. There was another, begun and maintained in near-total secrecy.

The Genetic Board searched among individuals in the Empire, searching for unique gene configurations. As their records were kept locked in secure memory in Brynhilde and later successors, we have no idea what they were searching for, other than clues that we gather from their results.

Over the years, various Idara conducted programs of genetic enhancement, most notably Idara Kuchta under Sten Kuchta (TE 123-237). By 252, many of the veterans of these programs had joined the ongoing program of the Genetic Board. In 252, under the sponsorship of Idara Kristeller, the program settled in permanent headquarters on the planet Obron.

By TE 320, they had two hundred six distinct bloodlines set up on about four hundred planets; thus, the program was popularly referred to as "the Two Hundred Six." During the Interrregnum, the program was known as The Kala Phenkae, supposedly from "Cealla Faenke" ("Two Hundred Six" in native Heloxan). The Kala Phenkae included Idaras Adelhardt, Carroll, Löwenger, and others, as well as many non-Idara families.

The Kala Phenkae fell under the direction of Idara Kristeller on Obron, and over the millennia the bloodlines were kept reasonably pure. During this time, the Kala Phenkae were one of the few influences that remained Galactic in scope, although communications difficulties and political circumstances often limited the program's effectiveness.

During the Second Empire, The Kala Phenkae mission was revealed: the program was aimed at producing individuals with high Schiller-Hertzfeld scores. Toward the end of the Second Empire, the program succeeded spectacularly, if perhaps not exactly as its creators had anticipated.
