PostHeaderIcon August Books of the Month

Welcome to a new feature. Every month I'm going to highlight one or two of my books.

August's books of the month are The Eighth Succession and Children of the Eighth Day. These titles introduce the Hoister Family Eighth Generation, a family of paranormal clone geniuses.

Both books will be one sale during a specific week in August, and I'll be giving a lot of information about them, mostly on Twitter. Click here to find out more.

The published Scattered Worlds books are now available in two ebook sets in Kindle format.

Beyond Our Stars: a Scattered Worlds omnibus ($8.99) contains Weaving the Web of Days, A Voice in Every Wind, All Roads Lead to Terra, A Rose From Old Terra, and The Leaves of October.

Worlds Afire: a scattered Worlds omnibus ($6.99) contains three novels of the Hoister Family: Dance for the Ivory Madonna, The Eighth Succession, and Children of the Eighth Day.

These ebook sets are the most inexpensive way to get up to date on the Scattered Worlds Mosaic.

Long Description:

The Eighth Succession introduced readers to the Hoister Family...Children of the Eighth Day takes the story of this remarkable family to the next level.

PostHeaderIcon Draft Finished and Cover Art

This magnificent piece of art is by Eric Massaro (http://grandeombre.deviantart.com/), and it will be on the cover of Children of the Eighth Day, the sequel to The Eighth Succession.

Last night I finished the penultimate draft of the book, which is now out to my alpha readers for feedback. Over the next few weeks I'll be working on cover design and copy, formatting the print and ebook editions, and proofreading.

Although the official publication date will most likely be September, I'm hoping we'll have copies for Balticon, where Melissa Scott and I are doing a book launch tea we're calling Tea From Four Worlds. More info on that as plans get finalized.

PostHeaderIcon Spirited Song

The S-Tetrad's yacht, designed by the X-Tetrad. Spirited Song is a 75-meter starship whose shape recalls the spiral of a conch shell.

PostHeaderIcon Odin's Harp

The Hoister R-Tetrad's personal yacht. Designed by the X-Tetrad, Odin's Harp is basically a wedge shape with curves that recall musical instruments. An ornamental mast anchors many sires, which suggest musical strings.

PostHeaderIcon Children of the Eighth Day: Prelude

Here's the first part of the novel I'm currently finishing up, Children of the Eighth Day (affectionately known as C8D). It's a sequel to The Eighth Succession, and continues the story of the psi-talented Hoister Family.

PostHeaderIcon Orbital Dynamics

I'm working on the next Hoister Family book, Children of the Eighth Day. (I'm on page 148 and hope to have the book done for Balticon 2014, thank you for asking.)

Anyway, I've reached a scene set on the planet Leikeis, fifth planet of Altair. So I look up "Leikeis" on this site, and I find that I have precious little information about the world: it was colonized in 2088, it became a great financial and banking center in the Terran Empire, the planet is well-known for the quality fo its seafood, that sort of thing. There's a rudimentary map with the names of three cities.

However, I don't have anything about what it's like on Leikeis. The problem is, I've never written anything set there.

In order to describe the planet, there are certain things I need to know. How hot (or cold) is it? What does the sun look like (Altair is a good deal hotter than our sun)? What's the gravity like, how long is the day, how long does the year last, what's in the sky, etc.?

PostHeaderIcon Kuamka

A stimulant drug popular in the First Empire. Kuamka is most often delivered in the form of a small white tablet that 9is placed under the tongue.

PostHeaderIcon Children of the Eighth Day

In the midst of all the hoopla surrounding publication of The Eighth Succession, I have made some time to get started on the follow-up book, Children of the Eighth Day.

I hesitate to call this a "sequel," because that connotes a continuation of the story. I hope readers feel that the story of The Eighth Succession came to a satisfactory conclusion.

If anything, I'd consider The Eighth Succession a prelude to Children of the Eighth Day. We'll be rejoining the Hoister Family 8th generation about a decade later, when all the kids are grown up and moved out into the galaxy. If you think Rikk and Yewanda caused some trouble for the Empire, just wait until you see what 36 Hoisters can do!

I'm hoping to have the book done in a year or so. Stay tuned!

P.S. You may have noticed a similarity of titles here: The Eighth Succession, Children of the Eighth Day. I have a couple more novels on the drawing board starring the Hoisters, and it's my intention to use the word "Eighth" in all the titles. My apologies if you think this is absolutely too cute to bear.

P.P.S. My apologies in advance to all the poor suffering librarians out there whose patrons are asking for the order of the books. I toyed with the idea of making the titles alphabetical, but it didn't happen. This site will always be the best source for chronological order of the Scattered Worlds works.

PostHeaderIcon Kastechian Plague

A fast-growing, all-devouring fungoid lifeform from the planet Kastechia. In its sessile, "flowering" form it resembles orchid blossoms, and is harmless. When deprived of moisture (i.e. during the middle of the hot Kastechian daylight period), the organism forms microscopic spores which are free-ranging. Upon contact with water and organic material, each spore begins to reorganize the molecules into another sessile form. The mucus membranes of the human nose, throat, and lungs are ideal raw material for Kastechian spores.

Other Physical Data:

Midway is roughly one-third land, most of which is in the form of one large continent. The coastal lowlands, primarily forest and grassland, are home to herds of kyapt.

Midway's main continent was originally divided into twelve ranches, each automated for maximum kyapt fur production. The oldest and dominant ranch is Lechem in the equatorial zone of the east coast. Counting clockwise, the others are Sheva, Tverya, Kiryat, Medeva, Grizim, Nevo, Herzila, Avadon, Beraq, Ganeden, and Yabok. A thirteenth ranch, Kineret, was added after the Adom/Kah'ol split, and became a de facto headquarters for the Adom party.

Map(s):

Biology:

The primary native lifeform on Midway is the kyapt, a mega-mammal about the size of a large mammoth, with a coat of fine fur that's much in demand in the Galaxy. Kyapt are herbivores who live on the trees and low bushes of the coastal forests and grasslands.

Kyapt have several natural predators; the most dangerous is a burrowing mammal about the size of a fox, called an empert; colonies of emperts dig traps for the large, clumsy kyapt and attack the animals when they're down.
